The Amazon Product Image Checklist I Use Before Every Listing Goes Live

2026/03/25

Every Amazon listing I publish goes through this 15-point image checklist. It takes 5 minutes and has caught problems that would have cost me thousands in lost sales and returns.

The 15-Point Checklist

Main Image (Position 1)

  • [ ] Pure white background — RGB 255,255,255, no shadows on the background
  • [ ] Product fills 85% of frame — Large enough to see details at thumbnail size
  • [ ] No text, logos, or watermarks — Amazon will suppress your listing
  • [ ] Product only — No props, no packaging (unless packaging IS the product)
  • [ ] High resolution — Minimum 2500×2500px for zoom functionality
  • [ ] All 7+ slots used — Listings with 7+ images convert 30% better
  • [ ] At least 1 lifestyle/in-use image — Shows the product being used
  • [ ] At least 1 infographic — Features, specs, or comparison
  • [ ] At least 1 scale reference — Product next to a common object
  • [ ] At least 1 detail close-up — Shows quality and craftsmanship

Technical Quality

  • [ ] All images sharp — Zoom to 100% and check edges
  • [ ] Colors accurate — Compare to the real product on your phone
  • [ ] Consistent lighting — All images should have the same color temperature
  • [ ] No compression artifacts — Export at JPEG 90%+ quality
  • [ ] Mobile test — View all images on your phone at listing size

Why Each Point Matters

Pure White Background

Amazon's algorithm checks main images for white backgrounds. Non-compliant images get suppressed — your listing disappears from search results without warning.

I use pic1.ai for every main image to ensure perfectly pure white backgrounds. Even if my studio background looks white, it's never RGB 255,255,255 without processing.

Product Fills 85%

At thumbnail size in search results, your product competes with dozens of others. A product that fills 85% of the frame is immediately recognizable. A product at 60% fill looks small and unimportant.

7+ Images

Amazon's own data shows that listings with 7+ images have significantly higher conversion rates. Each additional image reduces purchase uncertainty.

Mobile Test

This is the most overlooked check. 70%+ of Amazon shoppers are on mobile. An infographic with text that's readable on desktop but tiny on mobile is useless for most of your customers.

The 5-Minute Process

  1. Open all images in a viewer (2 minutes to scan through)
  2. Check main image against first 5 points (1 minute)
  3. Verify gallery coverage against points 6-10 (1 minute)
  4. Quick technical check against points 11-15 (1 minute)

If any point fails, fix it before publishing. A listing with a suppressed main image or missing gallery images is leaving money on the table.

The Cost of Skipping

I tracked the impact of publishing listings that failed various checklist points:

Failed Point Impact
Non-white background Listing suppressed (0 sales until fixed)
Small product in frame -25% CTR from search
Missing lifestyle image -12% conversion
No infographic -8% conversion
Blurry images -15% conversion
Not mobile-optimized -10% conversion

A single failed point can cost hundreds in lost sales per month. The 5-minute checklist is the highest-ROI activity in my listing process.
