Product Images Are an Untapped SEO Channel
Google Image Search drives 22% of all web searches. Google Shopping results appear at the top of product-related queries. Yet most sellers completely ignore image SEO.
Optimizing your product images for search can drive significant free traffic to your listings and store.

Image SEO Fundamentals
1. File Naming
Bad: IMG_4523.jpg, photo1.png, product.jpeg
Good: blue-leather-wallet-front-view.jpg, organic-cotton-tshirt-navy.png
File names should:
- Describe the product
- Include relevant keywords
- Use hyphens between words (not underscores)
- Be lowercase
- Be concise (under 50 characters)
2. Alt Text
Alt text is the most important image SEO factor. It tells Google what the image shows.
Bad alt text:
- "product image"
- "photo"
- "" (empty)
- "buy now best price cheap"
Good alt text:
- "Handmade leather bifold wallet in brown, front view showing card slots"
- "Organic cotton crew neck t-shirt in navy blue, size medium, flat lay"
- "Stainless steel water bottle 32oz with bamboo lid, lifestyle shot on hiking trail"
Alt Text Formula
[Material/Type] + [Product Name] + [Color/Size] + [View/Context]
3. Image Sitemap
Include images in your sitemap for faster indexing:
<url>
<loc>https://yourstore.com/products/leather-wallet</loc>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://yourstore.com/images/leather-wallet-front.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Brown Leather Bifold Wallet</image:title>
<image:caption>Handmade leather wallet with 6 card slots</image:caption>
</image:image>
</url>
4. Structured Data (Schema.org)
Add Product schema with image properties:
{
"@type": "Product",
"name": "Leather Bifold Wallet",
"image": [
"https://yourstore.com/images/wallet-front.jpg",
"https://yourstore.com/images/wallet-back.jpg",
"https://yourstore.com/images/wallet-open.jpg"
]
}
Multiple images in the schema increase your chances of appearing in rich results.
5. Image Compression
Page speed is a ranking factor. Large images slow down your pages.
- Target: 200-500KB per image
- Format: WebP (25-35% smaller than JPEG)
- Lazy loading: Load images as users scroll
- Responsive images: Serve different sizes for different devices
Google Shopping Optimization
Product Feed Image Best Practices
- Use your best image as the main image — This appears in Shopping results
- Include additional_image_link — Up to 10 additional images
- Match image to title — If your title says "red dress", the image should show a red dress
- Use high resolution — Higher quality images get more clicks
- White background preferred — Cleaner appearance in Shopping results
Google Merchant Center Image Policies
- No promotional text on images
- No watermarks
- Product must fill at least 75% of the image
- No collages or multi-product images (unless it's a bundle)
